Before you listen

You will hear a university seminar discussion about cultural identity in migrant communities. Read the questions first and predict what type of word is missing in each gap.

  • Look at the numbers in the gaps — is it a year, a percentage, or a quantity?
  • Underline keywords in each question before listening.
  • Notice signposting language such as 'firstly', 'however', 'in contrast'.
  • Listen for synonyms — the speakers rarely repeat the exact words from the questions.
