Passage 1

The return of the wolf

Academic Passage 1 · ~680 words.

AFor most of the twentieth century, the grey wolf was absent from much of Europe. Hunting, habitat loss and organised poisoning campaigns had reduced the population to a few thousand animals confined to remote pockets of Spain, Italy and eastern Europe. In the last three decades that picture has changed dramatically. Legal protection under the 1979 Bern Convention, the abandonment of marginal farmland and improved public attitudes have allowed the species to expand into countries where it had been extinct for a century or more.

BFrance recorded its first returning wolf in 1992; Germany followed in 2000, and packs are now established in the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. Recent counts put the European wolf population above twenty thousand, spread across almost every mainland country. The return is happening quietly and without human release — the animals are simply walking back through corridors of restored forest.

CEcologists welcome this. Wolves are what biologists call a keystone species: their presence reshapes ecosystems out of proportion to their numbers. Studies from Yellowstone National Park, where wolves were reintroduced in 1995, showed that even a small pack can change the behaviour of deer, which in turn allows young trees and riverbank vegetation to recover.

DThe response of rural communities has been more mixed. Sheep and goat farmers in the Alps and the Massif Central report growing losses, and compensation systems can be slow. Traditional livestock guarding — electric fencing, night enclosures and the reintroduction of large guard dogs — is effective but adds cost and labour. Governments have generally chosen to support prevention rather than culling, but the political pressure for exceptions is rising.

EPublic attitudes are more positive than farmers' organisations often claim. A 2022 survey across eight European countries found that around three-quarters of respondents supported the wolf's protected status, with strongest support in urban areas and among younger age groups. Rural respondents were more sceptical but still, on average, in favour of continued protection combined with better compensation for losses.

FWhether coexistence lasts will depend on the details: reliable compensation, well-funded guarding schemes, and a willingness to remove individual problem animals that attack livestock repeatedly. The wolf's return is, in a real sense, a test of whether modern Europe can live alongside a predator its ancestors spent centuries removing.

Passage 2

Why smell is our most emotional sense

Academic Passage 2 · ~640 words.

AMost sensory information — sight, sound, touch — is first processed by the thalamus, a small structure that acts as the brain's switchboard, before being routed to higher regions for conscious interpretation. Smell is the exception. Odour molecules picked up by receptors in the nose travel directly to the olfactory bulb, which sits just above the palate, and from there project straight into the amygdala and hippocampus — the brain areas that process emotion and memory. This anatomical shortcut may be the reason smells so often trigger memories that feel unusually vivid and old.

BThe phenomenon has a name: the Proust effect, after the French novelist Marcel Proust, whose narrator is transported to childhood by the taste of a small cake dipped in tea. Modern experiments confirm what novelists have long observed. In one study at Utrecht University, participants shown a familiar smell recalled autobiographical memories that were, on average, more emotional and from earlier in life than memories triggered by the same word or image.

CSmell is also our most cross-culturally variable sense. What people find pleasant depends heavily on association. Vanilla is calming in cultures where it appears in cooking, and neutral in cultures where it does not. Even individual odours can flip in meaning: cilantro smells fresh to some people and soapy to others, largely because of a single gene variant that alters how the molecule is detected.

DLoss of smell used to be treated as a minor inconvenience. That view has changed. Sudden anosmia, or loss of smell, was one of the earliest recognised symptoms of COVID-19, and studies of long-term sufferers show real effects on appetite, mood and social relationships. Food loses interest, spouses report emotional distance, and rates of low mood roughly double. Researchers now recommend smell training — a daily practice of consciously sniffing four familiar essential oils — as a low-cost recovery therapy.

EThere are wider implications. Because the olfactory bulb connects so directly to memory regions, its degeneration is often one of the first signs of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease — sometimes appearing years before other symptoms. Simple smell tests are now being trialled as an early screening tool in some clinics.

FThe lesson is that a sense once dismissed as decorative may in fact be central to memory, emotion and even brain health. Paying attention to what we smell, and to the loss of that ability, is more medically useful than we thought.

Passage 3

Rethinking the eight-hour workday

Academic Passage 3 · ~700 words.

AThe eight-hour working day is often described as a natural feature of modern life, but it is actually a specific product of nineteenth-century industry. Before the factory system, work was seasonal and irregular; agricultural labour was intense at harvest and much lighter for the rest of the year. The regular, uniform working day was invented to synchronise machines and workers, and the eight-hour standard was won by trade unions between 1880 and 1920 as a humane limit on what factories could demand.

BFor over a century that standard has remained largely unchallenged. Yet the nature of work has changed fundamentally. Physical labour has fallen from a majority of jobs to a small minority in most rich countries. Knowledge work — writing, analysing, designing, coding — dominates, and its output depends far more on concentration and creative energy than on hours logged. As economist Alex Pang has argued, treating an eight-hour desk day as a productive standard is the equivalent of asking a runner to jog for eight hours instead of run a race.

CRecent trials of a shorter working week have attracted wide attention. In 2022, a large pilot in the United Kingdom asked sixty-one companies to run a four-day, thirty-two-hour working week at full pay for six months. At the end of the trial, ninety-two per cent chose to continue. Employees reported better sleep, less burnout and improved family life. Crucially, revenue was steady or slightly higher — the reduction in hours was matched by more focused work and fewer meetings.

DSimilar results have come from earlier trials in Iceland, New Zealand and Japan. Microsoft Japan reported a forty-per-cent productivity gain after moving to a four-day week for a summer trial in 2019. Not every sector benefited equally: manufacturing and healthcare, which depend on continuous shifts, faced logistical difficulties and moved to different reforms, such as compressed hours or additional rest days.

ESceptics point out that short trials may exaggerate the effect. Employees know they are being observed and may work harder than usual. Others worry that concentrating five days of tasks into four simply increases stress on the days worked. Both criticisms deserve careful study, and long-term data is still limited.

FEven so, the direction of change looks clear. Belgium has given workers a legal right to request a four-day week, Spain is running a state-funded pilot, and dozens of individual companies across Europe and North America have adopted the model. If the results hold up, the twenty-first century may end the eight-hour day as decisively as the nineteenth century created it.
