Academic: chart / graph / process (150 words). GT: letter (150 words).
Essay response to a prompt (250 words).
- Suggested pacing: 20 minutes for Task 1, 40 minutes for Task 2.
- Task 2 is weighted twice as heavily as Task 1.

60 minutes total. Task 1: 20 minutes, 150 words. Task 2: 40 minutes, 250 words.
Academic Task 1 — Process diagram
The diagram below shows the process of recycling plastic bottles. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features.
Process steps: (1) bottles are collected from kerbside bins, (2) transported to a sorting plant, (3) separated by colour and type, (4) washed and shredded into flakes, (5) melted into small pellets, (6) pellets are shipped to manufacturers to make new bottles or textile fibres.
Academic Task 2 — Opinion essay
Some people think that university education should be free for all students, while others argue that students should pay a share of the cost. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
